Hassan Massoudy
He is an Iraqi calligrapher who was born in Najef in 1944. He left Iraq in 1969 and now lives in France. His work is highly distinguished with its wide, colorful and rich stroke lines, which gives him an unmistakable edge in modern art in general and in calligraphy more specifically.
Hassan’s work usually astonishes viewers who are familiar with the traditional form of calligraphy similar to that of Hashim Al-Khattat. Hassan is also unique in the sense that he is a performer. He would write on large size papers which then get projected into a screen to the sound of music in front of live audiences.
Hassan Massoudy is one of Iraq’s jewels and his work is most likely going to be a mark in the history of Iraqi art and calligraphy.
