The Power of Design in the Middle East

Today I remembered the TV ads that I saw for the last Iraqi Election. I remember being amazed by how well they were crafted and executed. So I went online and started searching for the source and after a painful and long search I stumbled upon the organization that made it happen. Its called “Future Iraq Assembly” with a slogan “One Nation. Promising Future.”
They say they are:

“Future Iraq Assembly is an independent, non-governmental organization, comprised of a number of scholars, businesspersons, and activists, who share a common and firm belief in freedom and progress for all the Iraqi people. It is simply the “watchful eye” over Iraqi interests.

Future Iraq Assembly encapsulates, both in name and mission, the illustrious image of Iraq that we can recapture in the brighter future we look forward to.”

I love it! I absolutely admire their campaign and the kind of messages that it sends to the Iraqis around the world. Its almost idealist. The reason I am writing about this is surprisingly not political, but artistic. since I am a designer and I strive for any creative and outstanding work in the design world, especially the Arabic Design world, I found this to be a great opportunity to start a dialogue about design and communication technologies from the Middle East and what kind of impact do they have on the people who live there.
According to wikipedia “Design is the process of originating and developing a plan for an aesthetic and functional object, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, iterative adjustment and re-design.”
The way I look at it is that design is a solution. its a complex order that comes from randomness which help solve a problem and communicate an effective solution in a highly aesthetic and functional way.
I know very little about the history of design in all of its forms from the Middle east and how it have been used to convey political and social messages to people through out the region. I know that I should know more about this but since I finished my education in a university in New York I learned very little about my field and its history in the Middle East, which is a shame but I would like anyone who knows anything to go a head and comment on this very important and critical subject. I would highly appreciate it.

  3. I was going to make some comments regarding the election but wondered if you prefer that your blog remain apolitical.

I certainly would understand that and there’s a part of me that almost hopes so as your blog has been a refuge for me in some ways…
